Some draft thoughts: - when Guelph took Tag Bertuzzi second overall there were a lot of people questioning the pick. No one is questioning Jaakko Wycisk. - 78 Amercicans drafted this year compared to 33 last year. - call them Spidey senses, but George Burnett (who is the poster child for holding his cards close to his chest) almost seemed to have an undercurrent of excitement when talking about third round pick Charlie Sullivan and the grit he brings to the game. - I know, I know, the Storm already has two highly-regarded young goaltenders. Why draft Cruz Reznik? I think it was a case of the best goalie in the draft (arguably) sitting there at the end of the third round that made them shift gears. Besides. whether it be a cache of draft picks or young talented players, they're all currency when it comes time to trade for what you need. - Only one Guelph Gryphon drafted this year, Brian Willsie's son. - Guelph also drafted the son of former athletic therapist Shane Mabey in the 14th round. He played in Waterloo. - the Friday night portion of the draft took waaaaay too long. Broadcast the first round then cut it off for heaven's sake. How can it take several minutes to make a pick when it's a team's second of a back-to-bak pick situation??? - there was a player drafted listed at six-foot-four, 144 pounds. - bold gamble in the fifth round by Guelph, taking a 2007 born player. Who knows. A late bloomer? - unlike previous years, where a first rounder appears to have shrunk an inch or two from what they have been listed as height-wise, Wycisk is indeed a legit six-footer, if not a touch taller.
